Open Floor Plan Lighting
Aside from aesthetics, the main reason for this trend is that open floor plans save energy in both winter and summer. If you want to learn more about how an open floor plan can make your home more energy efficient, take a look below:
Lighting
An open floor plan concept saves energy by providing more natural light throughout the home. Overall, having an open floor plan requires less artificial lighting, saving you money on your energy bill. When paired with properly installed energy-efficient windows and doors, as well as hardwood floors, an open floor plan will keep your home warmer with less heating needed. Alternatively, during the summer, an open floor plan means a home can be cooled simply by opening the windows and allowing breezes to flow through. Fewer square feet
Another benefit of an open floor plan is that homes feel larger with open floors. When you compare two homes with the same square footage, the home with an open floor plan will always feel more spacious. For this reason, small homes with open floor plans can actually be more comfortable than larger homes with closed designs.

Today I am sharing two farmhouse lighting design plans. I call it the Brushed Nickel and Barnwood Farmhouse Lighting Design Plan. Semi-flush mounting | 3. Island Pendants | 5. Bathroom vanity
We replaced the bathroom vanity light fixture during our first remodel and intend to keep what we have, so I've included this one just for you. In an effort to reduce our lighting budget and invest that money in another project, I attempted a farmhouse lighting scheme in matte black and barn wood. But, as I said earlier, I fell for the Brushed Nickel and Barnwood Globe Chandelier and just couldn't get the black to work with our existing fixtures. In fact, this whole farmhouse lighting design scheme in matte black and barn wood is stunning. Semi-flush mounting | 3. Island Pendants | 5. Main Entrance or Master Bedroom Bedrooms or Hallways Dining Room Above Island Down Hallway Vanity
Now is the time to bring the design to life - in phases. Phase 1 of our farmhouse lighting design plan, which includes the dining room chandelier and wall sconces, is underway.

Lighting That Works Well Together In An Open Concept Home
navy rug | office | chairs | hanging lampsOur house celebrates its 132 years this year. When we first moved into this house, the previous owner/owner had carved out the layout to create two apartments (well, three, if you count the master suite which we have since converted into a proper garden apartment) , which is pretty typical of Chicago. For a home of this age, it's rare to have such an open floor plan, although in true Chicago fashion, we still have separation from the kitchen and the various little nooks that make this home so special. But no matter where you are in our house, you can see almost every light fixture in every room on that floor. suspended lights | sectional | navy rug | Table C
Recently we replaced the fan in our home studio with the drum pendant at the opposite end of the same long piece. floor lamp | brass wall lamp | chair | sectional | low table
Perhaps our biggest struggle came into play in our treehouse when renovating our kitchen. We first chose a beautiful swing arm brass sconce to hang above the farmhouse sink, but it looked really out of place when paired with the schoolhouse style ceiling light and our living room globe. It took us years to learn, but we finally realized that deep down, we'll always crave the more classic choice:

luminous globe | sectional | poof | bear bottle opener
Choosing coordinated light fixtures in an open plan home can seem tricky, but keep in mind that doesn't mean all the lights have to be exactly the same! Below, we've rounded up various lights of all kinds – ceiling lights, fans, table lamps, floor lamps and sconces – and grouped them by style. Bold + Structural
