Caulk Gaps Under Bottom Of Baseboards

Caulk gaps under baseboards

You've installed the baseboards, caulked the tops and all the corners, and you're ready for the touch-up paint. Of course, you press down on the top of the base, as hard as you can, trying to get a snug fit on the floor when securing. Unfortunately, the gap is inevitable no matter how hard you push, no matter how flat the substrate is. These ugly gaps are especially pronounced when installing taller baseboard styles, on light to medium colored wood floors, not to mention the dreaded gap on hand-scraped or distressed floors. When I first tried to caulk the bottom gaps of baseboards, it was a complete mess. A few years ago an old time painter showed me a little trick using blue painters tape. It takes a little time at first to get the hang of putting the tape on, so you don't see any caulk after you pull the tape. When laying the tape, hold the roll flat against the baseboard as a guide to position the tape (first photo above). Using a finger, mold the tape to the contour of the floor, ie: bevels, slip. The tip of the knife in the corner will also allow you to tear the tape exactly in that corner. When caulking, try to have the nozzle position flat on the base instead of overlapping the 90, or down on the tape. Otherwise, when you pull the tape, the caulking will come out of the gap in some places. To remove it, pull the ribbon in the opposite direction, from right to left. Caulk one wall at a time and immediately pull the tape off. I'll caulk crawling backwards, then crawling forwards running my index finger strong against the caulk. At the end of the wall, the tape is pulled slowly, at an angle away from the wall.

Easy Way To Temporarily Insulate Gap Between Hardwood Floor And Baseboard?

Odors enter my apartment from a neighboring apartment and seem to penetrate through a current of air between the baseboard and the parquet floor of my apartment. Also, if I've talked to my landlord about filling the gap permanently, what's the recommended method to do so with hardwood floors?

Something went wrong. Wait a moment and try again.

Fix Gap Between Baseboard And Floor

Discussion Forum

Hello

I am renovating a bathroom and nearing completion - painting. One thing that has always bothered me about this bathroom is the gap between the baseboards and the floor. The floor is clearly not completely flat, and since the baseboards are white, the void is very visible. So I would like to fill it in, and I don't want to remove the baseboard, trace it, etc.
