And, don't be fooled by the number of coats some other companies talk about, the math doesn't always add up (see Garage Coatings Math: When 3 is greater than 5). Myth #2 - All garage flooring is the same, so just buy a kit from the big box stores. Now, I'm not saying all epoxy garage floor kits are bad. There are decent kits that can be purchased on the web, but they will still be inferior to a professionally applied epoxy and/or polyaspartic garage floor coating. Myth #4 - Just clean the garage floor and then it's ready to be epoxy coated. To ensure that an epoxy (or other polymer) will bond well, the concrete floor surface should be prepared to a concrete surface profile of 2 or better. Depending on the surface conditions and the coatings to be applied, the surface of the garage floor should be mechanically diamond ground or lightly shot blasted. Since most garage floor coatings are applied less than 125 mils (1/8") thick, diamond grinding is usually the preferred method. This myth may have some truth, but only if 1) the coatings are from a garage epoxy kit from a big box store, 2) the surface was not properly prepared, or 3) the installers did not properly apply the professional, industrial-strength coatings. While we celebrating our 10th year, we've only had a tiny number of customers who need help with their garage flooring.Applying a new topcoat over existing garage flooring does not is not yet part of our business, as most homeowners will get 10-20 years of service from our original liners. The most common issues we have with long term customers are that they have let themselves go. accumulate movies of road grime and melting ice on coatings, making the finish of the garage floor dull.
